The Bomb changes everything

The Bomb changes Everything
(by R.P.Edwards)

The bomb changes everything
It cuts through all the bull
All the lofty rhetoric
Of which we’re more than full
All the measured mutterings
Whose sum is less than air
All the pompous purposes
That leave our armory…bare
Yes, the bomb changes everything
A change that proves this truth
That weakness emboldens evil’s cause
And robs “us” …of our youth

“Vaporized,” the one word answer to the question concerning the condition of the front line unit that had charged across the eastern Iranian border after finally getting word to advance…from the pentagon.  The follow up was just as chilling, “We never thought they had so many, or that they would be so unconventional in their use.  Half the ground forces; half the fleet…vaporized.  We were expecting missiles,” the general continued, “but the small, suicide driven carriers, well…they weren’t expected.”

The report is that Iran is closer than ever to getting the bomb.  Closer than ever to fulfilling their goals of annihilating Israel, and doing some serious damage to “The Great Satan.”  And so, the solution is…more talk.  Sanctions? Maybe.  Meaningful sanctions?  Doubtful.  Military action?  Highly unlikely.  In fact, we’re probably putting together our “contingency” plans for dealing with a “nuclear Iran” right now.

However, there is one who will not wait.  There is one who has always had the crosshairs on their hearts and heads.  There is one who has, in the past, already taken the full measure of a madman’s hate.  And this one…“these”… will not tolerate another.  And when “they” act (for it appears we won‘t)…we’ll be forced to do the right thing.  But at what cost?

Rep. Costello explains

Sincerely…wrong
(by R.P.Edwards)

“Sincerity” has merit
In a nothing kind of way
A bow for launching arrows
That oftimes go astray
An aiming by the feeling heart
That leaves bystanders…dead
So, couple your sincerity
With a wise, and thinking…head

It was during Reagan’s first term.  I was attending a school in California and my young family was in need of some transportation; so I, being so worldly wise, headed to a downtown car lot to wheel and deal and, upon arriving, I saw it…a cute ‘74 red Dodge Colt with--get this!--a “tape deck.”  Whoa.  Remember; this was before 4-wheelin’ CD’s and MP3s.  Sure, every car had a radio, but a tape deck?  That was luxury.  In fact, that little feature sold me, and frankly, blinded me to other areas that needed serious scrutiny.  It was a terrible decision.

It’s been a little over a week since the disappointing healthcare vote.  My Representative, Jerry Costello--a pro-life Democrat--changed his stand at the last moment which helped push it over the top and, shortly thereafter, he sent his constituents (some, anyway) a letter of explanation which included his statement from the House floor.  I’ve provided a link containing the whole message, but following are some excerpts:

Madame Speaker, we meet today for what will truly be a historic debate and vote on national health care reform.  Like the passage of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare in 1965, it is sure to be one of a handful of votes that will stand the test of time as of great national significance…

This has been the hardest decision regarding a vote I have had to make during my service in the House of Representatives.  During that time, I have strived to serve the people I represent with diligence and integrity, while remaining true to my core individual beliefs….

I stated that I would not vote for the Senate-passed bill in its current form.  With the presidential executive order approving the Hyde abortion language and the fact that H.R. 4872 eliminates the "Cornhusker Kickback" and other state-specific promises, combined with assurances from the Senate that H.R. 4872 will pass that body, I feel I can now support the Senate bill as amended…

The fact is that this may be our last best chance to address a health care system that is unsustainable…

With all due respect, my Congressman’s swing vote reminds me of my unfortunate car purchase, over twenty-five years ago. Without question, there are provisions in the bill…that are laudable.  Provisions that could have, I believe, been addressed separately, and precisely.  However, there was a hard sell, a full press--if you will--by some pretty savvy salespeople.  And, these “true believers” created an atmosphere of urgency that shouted, “Now…or never!” And even went so far as to equate this unwieldy behemoth with past “bipartisan” legislation that truly might be classified as “milestones.”  However, with each passing day, the dirty little details of  “this” bill are slowly coming to light.  And, just like my little “lemon” from years ago; the unseen (though certainly perceivable if investigated) faults…may prove fatal.  You see, my little transport needed major heart surgery.  This unexpected expense diverted much needed funds, which eventually led to repossession (another story) and, along the way, a ticket issued for driving a “smoky” car (remember…California)  Anyway, I believe the bill is a stinker.  I only hope that when it finally becomes undeniably evident, that my Representative takes the floor again.  This time to say, “I’m sorry I voted for it.”  That “would” be a milestone.  And a certain step towards reelection.

Here’s a link to the whole speech: Rep. Costello floor speech

Ann Coulter, why waste your time?

Higher Education?
(by R.P.Edwards)

Higher education
Higher, in what way?
Higher in their arrogance?
Higher in their pay?
Higher in their import?
Higher in their minds?
Higher in their twisted words
That mold our child’s mind?
Higher in their moral voice?
Higher in their worth?
No
They’re “Higher” in their toxic wind
That poisons…all the earth.

Ann Coulter goes to a Canadian University…and is prevented from speaking because some ‘enlightened’ students throw a tantrum.  Is this surprising?  No, secular universities (and not a few “religious” ones) are bastions of “liberal think” which espouses freedom, except when it disagrees with their ideology.  So, I’m not surprised at the uproar.  But what I am surprised at…is why do we care?  Why do we care what university students and professors think?  Who are they?  Why are they important?  Why do they deserve even a moment of our time?

Now, perhaps years ago, when charters were made and cornerstones laid; perhaps then opinions would count.  Perhaps then, when, like the signers of the Declaration of Independence, there was a general acknowledgement of God, and that all “rights” come from Him; perhaps then these faithful tutors and the tutored would be worth a listen.  But now?  What a laugh.

So Ann, here’s some advice.  Next time, instead of going to fantasyland, rent a hall in a town or city where people actually “work.”  A place where the effects of University bred lawmakers…is dearly felt.  A place where the everyday hardships of “life” produces an education so much higher than that spewed from the ivory towers.  I promise, we won’t shout you down.

As an aside:  Jonathan Dickinson, the first President of Princeton, said, “Cursed be all that learning that is contrary to the cross of Christ.”  Yes, brother, it is cursed…indeed.

Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem

Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem
(R.P.Edwards)

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem”
The wise will always do
But those who seek to vex her
Are rightly labeled…fools
For blessing brings a blessing
And cursing, breaks “your” bone
So, pray for the peace of Jerusalem
And love her…as your own

In a strange--though not totally unexpected--turn of events, the Administration, following the strong recommendation of the European Union, began ridding the National Mall of the many space-occupying memorials in order to install a solar farm, ringed by festive, towering wind turbines.  “Instead of these bulky, and for the most part--useless--mementos, we’ll now help reduce green-house gas emissions and thus slow the scourge of global warming,” said a government spokesman as he gave a tour of the area once occupied by the Washington Monument.  “However,” he continued (pausing at the base of the nearest air-catcher), “for those still interested in such things, as you can see here (pointing to a small rectangular plaque attached to an access panel) this baby is called the “Washington Monument windmill.”  When asked if the huge reflecting pool (located directly east of where the  Lincoln Memorial ‘used‘ to stand) would be filled in for yet more space, he replied, “No,” and then pausing to stoop down to bring up a handful of green slime from the water, he continued, “we’ve decided this basin is a ready made habitat for the growth of edible algae.  Which can also be used,” he went on, standing and wiping his hand with a white silk hankie (except for a dab on his index finger, which he popped into his mouth [much to the delight of the press corps]); “Which can also be used…for biofuel.”

You know, there’s something irksome about neighbors telling you what to do with your own property.  I once had a elderly lady strongly recommend that I remove all the trees in our back yard.  Why? Because she, personally, didn’t like trees.  “Thanks.  I’ll be sure to think about that.”  Naturally, I didn’t care if her plot was the Sahara in the summer.  It’s your land; do what you want.  But as for this fellow; a little shade is appreciated.

Well, for the life of me, why are we--as in The United States--trying to dictate to Israel what they can and cannot do…in Jerusalem (of all places)! “Stop building settlements,” we say.  Inferring that it would somehow hinder peace negotiations.  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyhu politely responds, “Jerusalem is our capital.  It’s not a settlement.”  But what he should have said is, “Stick it!” Or, as General McAuliffe (Commander of the U.S. forces holding Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge) replied to the German officer who demanded that the encircled and outnumbered Americans surrender:  “Nuts!”

Okay, let me shift gears a bit.  As a Christian who reads his Bible I know you don’t (if you’re smart) mess with Israel.  You see, there really is a God, and that whole “blessing and cursing” thing he said to Abraham…still applies.  If we’re smart, we’ll support, protect, nurture, encourage, and in all other ways…bless her.  But, “smart,” these days…is yet another word that is being redefined by our oh-so-wise “teachers.”

My Christmas List

Could have Beens
(by R.P.Edwards)

They could have been heroes
Standing so tall
Like David of old
A giant…to fall
Their hearts, resolute
Their votes, the smooth stone
A victory to win
Our praises…to own
But no, they succumbed
To the wiles of weight
And bowed to the press
Our future…to hate
So now “we” must battle
For life, and for home
Because “could be” heroes
Must now be…disowned

“You’re going to put on Christmas music after you drop me off, aren’t you?”  “Yes, most likely.”  The end conversation before this morning’s college drop off.  She and I had been listening to “her” contemporary fare, but I wanted some “comfort music” on the way home.  Perry began with “White Christmas,” and it got me to thinkin’.

Well, it’s been a couple days since the “vote” and, since I half expected it, my disappointment is not debilitating.  I am, however, rather downcast about the vote of my pro-life Rep, Jerry Costello, and Rep Stupak, the former champion of the unborn.  And yes, and of course, this monstrosity of a bill is about so much more than abortion.  But, for me, and for many others, that was the ultimate deal breaker.  And to surrender your sword for the promise of a temporary executive order?  Outrageous.

And so, as the President signs, and his followers sigh.  As the Senate digs in, for the war to begin. As State attorney generals prepare, for the scourge of Obamacare; at least we have a list.  At least we have a Christmas wish list to prepare for, strive for, work for.  It’s a roll call for rollbacks; a desire, for retire.  It’s a wake up call and walking papers for those who couldn’t slow down and make a “good” bipartisan fix to the healthcare system, and instead forced this poison porridge down our collective throats.  Yes, it’s time for the Christmas list.  And, sadly, my Representative…occupies the first spot.

The Riddle's answer, at last

Curiouser and Curiouser
(by R.P.Edwards)

“We’re all mad here,”
So says the cat
And voting Reps
Are proof of that
They chase the rabbit
Down the hole
And tethered to
We all…must go
And so, through them
We drink the drink
Our brains, our wills
Our rights…do shrink
Yet they eat cake
Their heads…to grow
And race about
Like the dodo
Oh wondrous is this land of they
Where hatters, mad
And dormouse play
Yet…when we wake
In autumn’s tread
Let’s join the queen
And off…their head

And so…it passes.  The healthcare bill.  The ominous, odorous, feared, revered, lauded and loaded, hopeful and hopeless; the president’s much championed--forsaking all others--healthcare bill…passes.  Madness.

I must admit, I had more important things to do on the day of its birth (i.e. spending time with like-minded worshipers), but I did attend to the political theater…for just a bit.  I found most interesting the lock-armed walk of legislators comparing themselves to civil righters long decades ago; as if this budget breaker and society enslaver in any way compares to the ending of bigoted oppression. Madness.

I also found interesting the bending of the unbendable pro-lifers…all for the unwritten promise of the most anti-life president ever.  Truly, a blind giving of faith to those whose “faith” has no room for the most innocent of all.  Madness.

And, I think of the number crunchers.  The true believers that government involvement will somehow produce what it has never produced before…  fiscal responsibility.  Indeed, an amazing leap considering the track record.  Again…madness.

And so, since, on so many levels this is indeed “March Madness,” I must conclude that we are in Wonderland.  And, in that fanciful place created by Lewis Carroll, there is a Mad Hatter with a, heretofore, unanswered riddle.  Thus,  “Why is a raven like a writing desk?”  Now we, at long last, know the answer:  Because this wretched legislation…is for the birds.

Final Push for Healthcare

The Closer
(by R.P.Edwards)

“Guts and Courage!”
That’s the line
The salesman’s pitch
The smooth opine
“That’s it…Do it!
Damn your fears
Be a man!
Your time is here!”
And so…we swallow
Conviction…sure
Hearing not
The salesman’s purr
And with time and poison
Words…are few
Except near death
“What did I do?”

It’s a bad feeling.  A gut wrencher.  A kind of, “I almost stepped off a cliff,” kind of feeling except, you did step off; and things aren’t going to get any better until after the hard landing.   That’s how I feel about this healthcare bill.  This massive legislation, being pushed, and pushed, and pushed by the President and his followers, is going to send us careening off the proverbial cliff.  And, to help us swallow this poison he uses lines like, “Guts and Courage.”  Give me a break.

I’ll tell you where the guts and courage come in.  They come in the form of congressional representatives doing what they were elected to do…Represent!  Listen Ma’am! Sir! Do you hear what your constituents are saying?  Do you care what “their” opinion is concerning this all important matter?  Has Washington cut your ties, deadened your ears, removed your spine?  Sure, we want you to fix healthcare; that’s part of the reason you have your cushy job.  But this way?  This back door, corrupt, sleazy, no where near bi-partisan way?!  I think not.

And so, the vote is nearing.  The President’s dream of transforming the nation…is nearing.  But, I hope before we finally kowtow to corruption; before we ultimately abdicate from Americanism; before we so willingly surrender our sovereignty and pawn our patriotism; I hope there are a few…a brave, and noble, and selfless few…who realize that this is the time for Courage, and Guts, and Determination.  Stand, therefore--you who see it--against this monstrosity! Stand against this immoral maelstrom!  Stand against this crush of corruption!  Stand! Stand! Stand! Stand until those who oppose you; those few who would steer our mighty ship of state onto the wreck strewn reef of socialism; until they…cease to stand.  And, if, with all your efforts, with the giving of the last drop of blood; if then the hull is ultimately breached, then know you have done all.  And that’s all we ask of you.  That you give…all.

Deem and Pass...out

Note…Due
 (by R.P.Edwards)

Where you goin’?
Where you been?
Tell me, Charlie
Clue me in
How much you make?
How much you owe?
Tell me, Chuck
I need to know
Where you live?
How long? Alone?
Let me in
To snoop your home
Under carpets
Under chairs
Let me count your underwear
Is that your car?
A righteous ride
What’s in the trunk?
What did you hide?
And while we’re at it
What’d you eat?
How much fiber, fat, and sweet?
So give me samples
Blood, to start
Now, run a mile
I’ll check your heart
And make some time
For deeper probes
Remove your rights
Now here’s your robe
And how’s your mind?
You thinkin’ right?
What you watchin’ day and night?
What you readin‘?
How you pray?
Listen, Chaz
I’ll have my way
So…no complainin’
No boo hoo
Remember, chuckles
I’m here…for you
Besides…you voted
For my ways
So…stop your gripin’
It’s time…to pay

Fried Bologna.  A simple request by my nine year old son.  True, in my New England upbringing (long, long ago) I had never heard of bologna being treated in such an uncivilized fashion but, since the slab of mishmash meat is nothing more than a flattened hot dog…

Deem and Pass; the phrase of the day.  In short: it’s an end run around the up or down vote we simpletons expect from our elected representatives; especially on something as monumental as this healthcare bill.  After all, it will effect all of us and our progeny from here on out.  And, unlike the unstimulating stimulus bill, this monster does not come with a poison pill.  It will live on…and on…and on.  And, even if an enraged electorate kick to the curb many who add their “amen” to this unholy homily; the new brood of legislators will not have enough oomph to override a certain veto.  Yes, it’s a case of incredible, unconscionable, reprehensible, outrageous, appalling, over the top…arrogance.  And to think; we voted them “all” in.

By-the-way, the opening poem was inspired by the “you are required by law” census form I filled out today.  And if you don’t do it…someone will come acallin’.  "One more question, sir.  How do you eat your bologna?"

Jerry Costello, and Temptation

When not to
(by R.P.Edwards)

Compromise
It has its place
In choosing where to go
For movies and a dinner’s dine
For music…fast…or slow
But some things
Mustn’t waver be
Whate’er the shifting sand
So steel your heart
Before you start
And standing…
Ever…stand

Most assuredly…it is a donut in disguise.

I remember long, long ago, listening to a comedic bit by Bill Cosby (probably on an album) concerning care for one of his kids.  The quandary before him was; what to feed the tyke for breakfast?  And the answer…cake.  His line of logic being; the tasty dessert is made of eggs, flour, milk, and sugar.  How then is it in any way inferior to a donut, a waffle, or some breakfast cereal slathered in sucrose?  The conclusion…no different.  However, the feminine mind doesn’t work that way.  So, “Better not tell mom.”

On the way home, finishing yet another midnight shift, I suddenly had a desire for a chocolate covered donut; the kind that a local grocer produces to woo the weak, such as I.  However, after a minutes contemplation, and realizing that the price of two or three of these lovelies was equivalent to the chocolate cake that was prepared, rested and ready in our kitchen, I went home and had a slice of cake…instead.

Also, this morning, before the whole “temptation thing” I noticed a local headline.  It seems my Congressman, Jerry Costello (D), is against the present--gotta have it!--healthcare option. Although he voted for the House version last time, it seems the Senate version is odious on many levels.  One of which…its treatment of the unborn.  Jerry, although a staunch Democrat, consistently votes pro-life, and pro-traditional marriage.  And, for his uncompromising stand…he continues to have my support.  I only hope the many “donuts” they throw his way…won’t sway him.  Stand tough, Mr. Costello.  The nation needs you to bring some sanity…to our diet.

Undercover Boss' Boss

Undercover Boss
(by R.P.Edwards)

Undercover
C E O
To see how things are done
Bypassing
Middle management
Where facts are often…spun
But there’s an undercover Boss
We’ll “all” see from our knees
And He’ll reveal His former place
When known as
“least…of these”

At the time of this offering there is a trifle of a show called, “Undercover Boss.”  The premise: A business big wig descends (in costume of the common) from his lofty perch and rubs elbows with the lowest of the low…in his company.  Much like Edward, in Mark Twain’s entertaining piece, “The Prince and the Pauper,” for a very brief time the mighty CEO pretends to be a new employee (cameraman in tow for a ‘documentary’) and thereby sees the foundation of his business unfiltered by the inevitable Yes-men who congregate in middle management.  The show is entertaining, endearing and, from my decades long association with corporate compassion; more fairytale…than fact.  Not to say that there is not the potential for caring interaction.  But this is an individual thing; hardly the top-down edict of the heartless organism where “process”…always, always, trumps…people.

Concerning the King in beggars clothes, there’s a scripture that comes to mind.  Matthew 25:45 says, “He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’”  You see, all around us…He is there.  In the unlovely, the imperfect, the unpolished, the unprofessional, the unpopular…He is there.  In the poor, the prisons, the prostitutes…He is there.  In hovels and hospitals…He is there.  And the question is…what will we do with Him? For Him?  Yes, the CEO of the Universe is among us...and the camera...is rolling.

No! Mr. Newdow

Meaningless?
(by R.P.Edwards)

Michael Newdow
Don’t despair
Though the court says
They don’t care
If “God” remains upon our pay
And in the pledge?
That’s A-O-K
For they say “He”
Is just a word
When spoken thus
No reverence heard
Yes
Empty sounds
No substance due
Like “good”
And “evil”
“Lie”
And “true”

Martha (a sensitive eight year old) couldn’t, for the life of her, figure out why Ms. Beasly (the principle) wanted to “talk” with her in the hall.  The start of the school day seemed normal enough (some chit chat, a call to stand and be silent, then a turning towards the flag…and then the Pledge of Allegiance).  Yes, normal enough; but right after the pledge Mr. Dower (their teacher), made a quick call on his cell phone, and now, a few minutes later…Ms. Beasly…was waiting.  “Martha,” said the rather large middle-aged matron, “do you know why I wanted to talk with you this morning?”  “No ma’am,” was the timid reply as the child’s tiny hands and fingers began to fidget amongst themselves at waist level.  “Martha,” said the elder reassuringly (squatting down to be at eye level and, at the same time, reaching over to take the young girl’s hands in her own).  “You were doing it again,” she continued (giving an over-the-glasses peek and a wink) and, with the words, a knowing expression came over the child’s face.  “Ohhh,” said the waif, pulling her right hand gently away and retrieving a small silver cross that dangled at the end of a nearly invisible chain that hung from the child’s neck and was usually tucked safely away behind the upper right quadrant of her azure blouse.  “I was holding it again, wasn’t I?” the girl continued, stroking the symbol lovingly as she brought it to the light.  “Yes, dear, you were stroking it,” the principle emphasized as she slowly stood and then offered the child her left hand for a soft turning back towards the classroom door.  “You simply can’t show any emotional attachment to such a religious symbol during the pledge of allegiance, or at any time during the school day.”  “But…but…why not?” whimpered the teary eyed lovely as she stopped just short of the doorway.  “I love Him so.”  “Yes, yes, dear.  We know you do.  But the Court has determined that the word “God,” in the pledge and on our money…is merely ceremonial.  It really doesn’t mean a Supreme Being that you pray to.  Do you understand?”  After a weak nod and agreement by the youngster, the child was gently pushed through the opening as all eyes within…turned upon her.  And, as the door slowly closed behind the wee one, the principle, as her hard soled shoes clacked against the tile as she made her way to the teachers lounge for a latte, could be heard to say… “Poor delusional child.  Poor delusional child.”

And so, famed atheist, Michael Newdow’s efforts to remove “God” from the Pledge of Allegiance, and from our currency has, for the moment, failed.  Unfortunately, instead of citing our Judeo Christian roots and beginnings, the courts says, in essence, the word “God” has no religious meaning.  Well then, it’s in good company.  Apparently  the word, “Truth” has little meaning…either.

Cut and Run, Mr. President

Cut and Run
(by R.P.Edwards)

Heady
From the victory won
You never thought of
Cut and run
Overwhelming
All…your way
Your words…were wonders
Your plans…full sway
But like the wind
Directions turn
Ambitions crumble
As people…learn
And with the rising
Of “this” sun
Some dared to whisper
“Cut…and run”
But no!
The mandate
Firm is mine!
Just one more speech
Some added time
And Drive! And Drive!
Until…is done
While wounded cry out
“Cut…and run!
Withdraw!
Regroup!”
Your soldiers say
“We’ll come in strength
Another day!
Give up this quest
This battle…lost!”
But you… unsighted
disdain the cost
And so…they charge
In faithful due
But with the gain
They fall…for you
And as they’re trampled
 every one
Their final gasp
“please, cut…and run”

“Cut your losses.  Quit while you’re ahead.  He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day.  Cut…and run.”  All phrases associated with wisdom in warfare; be it on the battlefield with bombs and bullets, or in other, less violent venues, including politics (especially politics!)  Yes, choose your battles wisely, and let your ultimate “vision” include the useful preservation…of your troops.

And so, against the rising tide of public opinion; and against the advice of many in his own party; the president is determined, come hell or high water, to shove the odious Senate healthcare bill down our collective throats.  Truly, he is single-minded.  A resolute believer.  And, apparently, nothing less than the behemoth…is acceptable.  In the meantime, torches and pitchforks are being prepared for those representatives and senators who, by backing this monstrosity, treat their constituents as mindless rubes.  But, instead of storming the castle, the voting booth will receive the ire…of the masses.

Perhaps the chief executive should reconsider the advice of…cut…and run.

A bunny's fate

Bunnycide
(by R.P.Edwards)

Soft and brown
Cute and dear
Little feet
And long of ear
Then thrown into the freezer’s craw
Nevermore
To warm…or thaw
And then withdrawn
On table placed
Raise high the hammer
O’er your face
And then with violence!
Pieces…you
Yet…made for tongues
And not to chew
And “not” like chicken
But chocolate…sweet
Oh, candy bunny
Our Easter…treat

My wife came home with the package; the nondescript grocery bag that usually holds nothing more than the endless circle of routine meals and deals that we, as a family, tolerate as a whole (an imperfect toleration.)  But, this day…there was something--or should I say “someone”--more.  And this “someone” peeked silently from the cellophane window contained in a festive colored cardboard box.  Silent, and totally ignorant of his (or her, not sure) fate.

Straight away the box was place on a freezer shelf.  For, as everyone knows, a chocolate bunny is best served…very cold.  And then, when enough time had elapsed for the marvelous molecules to slow down sufficiently…the creature was brought into the light and, with a violent shucking of the container, a small crescent wrench (which I carry; doesn’t everyone?) was brought down: again! and Again! and Again! Until the chocolate bunny body could take it no more and, yielding an acceptable piece, this was quickly garnered and the remainder of the carcass…back into the crypt.

And so, the debate (albeit a silly one [needful from time to time]): at what temperature should milk chocolate be served; be consumed?  I prefer very cold; icecubish.  This inclination, however--if the beginning portion is large--requires violent intervention  (a blunt object or a saw of some sort) in order to achieve a taste bud ready size.  And, if the hunk is larger still; well, it can get somewhat brutal.  Speaking of which, I remember a couple years back when my honey found a deal on the “large” bunnies (you know, sixteen ouncers?) and I had to resort to a hammer in order to get the goods (hint: place in a strong freezer bag first).  Much pounding that year (she bought more than one).

And so, as you peruse the candy isle and see the seasonal offering of…chocolate bunnies; sure, you can eat them warm, taking dainty little baby bites.  Or, if you prefer, you can gnaw away like a bucktoothed beaver.  But, if you want to eat them the way they “should” be eaten; then open the deep freeze, and get your hammer…ready.

The Fear of the Lord...is the Beginning of Knowledge (Proverbs 1:7)

The Need
(by R.P.Edwards)

Shelter
Food
Water
Air
Essentials of life
For minimum…care
But more than these
A child’s “must”
To learn of God
And in Him…
Trust

Alright, I hear via the tube and inter-tube, that the Texas Board of Education is mulling over the textbook suggestions made by the latest crop of educational “experts.”  It has national attention because, for some reason, in the area of textbooks, “as goes Texas, so goes the nation.” And, as you can imagine, there’s a bit of a controversy about what is “put in” or “left out.”  Business as usual.

Listen, if you’ve read this blog for any length of time you know of my jaded view when it comes to the Ivory Towers, and those birthed of them.  Therefore, when textbooks are written in “secularville,” that’s what you get.  Yes, you are served a main course of no-godism, with a side of superstition to assuage the ignorant (us).

Bottom line: if you are a Christian and want your child to have a basic Christian view of things; by all means…get them out of the public school system.  Now, I could argue the “beginnings” of education and the Bible’s prominent place.  But those days are long gone.  So, if you want Johnny or Jill to have a better chance of being grounded, stable, secure, in their Christian faith…then seek out a private institution, or Home school.  And, as far as Public Schools are concerned, rather that weary yourself trying to maintain the meaning of “Christmas” in the classroom, focus your efforts, rather, on the most equitable use of your tax dollars…vouchers.

In case you’re interested, here’s a link to the Texas Education Agency, which has the lowdown on the coming textbooks. Texas Education Agency

One hundred years from now

In Perspective
(by R.P.Edwards)

A vapor
A wisp
A moment…then gone
Troubles
And triumphs
Weeping
And song
All of life’s doings
And dying
And dance
All for the moment
All…for the chance
Yes
All that we live for
And strive for
And fear
All of our trappings
That add to us…here
All that we go through
The pleasure
The pain
The constant bombardment
Perpetual drain
Yes
All that we are
And all that we’ve been
Will all seem…as nothing
When we hear… “Come in.”

“It won’t matter…one hundred years from now.”  An offhand remark I sometimes say after a minor session of grousing about this or that.  It’s a step back, a reality check, a putting in perspective.  In other words; of all the many “important” little details that consume us, the most important detail--where we spend eternity--trumps…all.  And, for the Christian, there is solace in the knowledge that arms of love await us at the end of this, sometimes rugged, tragic, tear-filled, road.  Something to consider.  For, "one hundred years from now" ...is surely coming.

NCAA...who needs you?

Where is my Country?
(by R.P.Edwards)

Where is my country?
Where has it gone?
This place where I live
Says living…is wrong
Babies are fodder
Marriage…abased
Leaders…lead downward
Surrender our place
Where is my country?
The one born divine
Rights, from God given
Our mantra now, “Mine!”
Changing the words
Once sacred, revered
Twisted for bidding
Of those…without fear
Yes, where is my country?
It’s dying
Near death
It languishes
Gasping…out
Freedom’s…last breath

“All I want for my son is for him to grow up knowing how to do the right thing."  This “offensive” caption goes along with the picture of a father…holding his young son.  And so, the Focus on the Family ad…is pulled from the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) website.

The question:…who finds this benign, family oriented ad offensive?  Who, by their sweeping denial, label a decades old faithful support of traditional family and Christian values…extreme?  The answer: The new (not so new, rather) spokesmen of right and wrong; that is, the godless academics to whom we send our precious children and subsidize with our hard earned tax dollars.

Okay, just for fun, let’s look at a couple of the “Core Values” of the NCAA, as given on their website.  The section begins:  The Association - through its member institutions, conferences and national office staff - shares a belief in and commitment to:

-inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and career opportunities for coaches and administrators from diverse backgrounds.

-Respect for institutional autonomy and philosophical differences.

Now, dear reader, some in the egg-head (many, I dare say) have interpreted these words as a support “for” all manner of sexual lifestyles and, of course, the unhindered destruction of human life in the womb (abortion), and “against” those who hold traditional views.  Thus, “right” is now “wrong,” and “good” is now “evil.”

You know, they weary me; these prominently placed proclaimers who try to shove their damnable perversions down our throat.  Oh, I know, that’s a bit harsh.  But the destruction of my America demands truth, and that, brother, is in short supply, especially in the ivy covered palaces.

But, before I end this little rant, a simple query:  This America.  This land of liberty which we have inherited.  Did it come; was it birthed, was it died for, was it sacrificed for, was it tirelessly worked for…by those who more closely resemble the fine people of Focus on the Family, or by the robed elites who hand out diplomas and delusional diatribes like candy?  The answer is obvious.

Here’s a link to Focus on the Family.  You be the judge.  http://www.focusonthefamily.com/

Bled...to death

Stop the Bleeding
(by R.P.Edwards)

Stop the bleeding!
Close the vein!
Life is going
Down the drain
No distractions!
No delay!
Healing starts
No other way
So, focus, Focus!
Tie and mend!
Not a wasted second spend!
For all…is nothing
Save this part
To stop the bleeding
To save…the heart

Dr. Ornan, or, as his associates called him, Dr. Femur (after the largest bone in the human body) was, without question, the finest orthopedic surgeon in the bi-state region, and it was very fortunate (so he thought to himself) that this mangled man before him (thrown from a ten car pile up due to morning fog) had his expertise available without the hassle of being on the three month waiting list that most of his new patients endured.  “There,” he said audibly after setting and splinting a badly broken  radius “and” humerus of the twenty-something’s right arm, “that will help in the transport.”  Just then an older (and familiar) EMT gently, but firmly, pulled the physician away from the unconscious victim and began vigorously applying a press to a gaping laceration near the left hip.  “Nice work, doc,” said the ambulance driver dryly, without looking up.  “But you have to stop the bleeding, first.”  Then, looking over and up to the now standing surgeon (as other first responders rushed to assist), he repeated, “You’ve got to stop the bleeding…first!”

As the President pressures the congress to ram through the bloated healthcare legislation (with the assurance that ‘fixes’ would come thereafter) I think of the many “contracts” I’ve signed in my life…that I later regretted.  Do I believe we need to fix healthcare?  Of course!  But right now our economy is bleeding out.  Let’s get a handle on that; on staying “alive,” and then we can take a measured, thorough approach to fixing the other problems.

Just for the heck of it I looked up the stats on the demise of our first president, George Washington.  In the process of “treating” his final ailment the physicians of the day drained over half a gallon of his blood from his body; the thought being that it would in some way “cure” him.  It didn’t.  I hope our current “bloodletting” doesn’t have the same result.

Pelosi says, "Take one for the team"

Martyrs
(by R.P.Edwards)

Martyrs
Come
In different hues
For the cause
Their dying
Choose
But causes vary
Dark and light
And time will tell…
The wrong
The right

“Take one for the team!” a joking suggestion made to the boy at the plate who, more often than not, has just deftly (or not so much) avoided a wayward baseball.  Taking one for the team means a trip to first base…and that might lead to a run; which might lead to a win. Unfortunately, the “takee,” for his part, has a sore body-part.  It is martyrdom, on the smallest of scales. A personal sacrifice…for the greater good.

I was thinking along these lines recently as I heard of Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi’s, suggestion that certain members (those whose reelection is questionable) suck it up and support the highly unpopular Healthcare legislation.  In other words, “If you’re kicked out of office, at least you know you did the “right” thing; the needful, courageous…thing.”  Another case of personal sacrifice…for the greater good.

Yes, it all comes down to belief, and brother, we are “believers.”  The difficulty comes in “what” you believe…and how it effects others.  But more than an academic exercise where all sides are equal, I am convinced that there really is right and wrong, good and evil, smart…and extremely dumb.  I’d suggest these Congress folk think long and hard before they “take one for the team.”  Because, sometimes, the “team” …is just plain wrong.

Just for the heck of it (since the broad heading is ‘Martyrdom,’) I looked up some final penned thoughts by…Kamikaze pilots.  Here’s what a Captain Kenichi Shibuya wrote before aiming his flying bomb towards U.S. forces off Okinawa.

It is a silly idea of an ordinary man to look for a way he can both survive and win the war. Now I will accept my death and make a suicide attack. However, only gods know how the war would turn out. I believe it is a true national crisis. Although I am going to die, that doesn't mean that I will completely die. I will live in eternal righteousness.

Interesting…

Of Quakes and Questions

The Shaking
(by R.P.Edwards)

When lives are shaken
Sifted…full
When all connected
Pushed
And pulled
When boundaries, borders
Cease to be
It’s then we learn
The truths…
Of me

It was a desperate time; a frantic, fearful, desperate...time.  The earthquake; the enormous earthquake (so much larger than any had expected), had shaken, not only their modest split level house (still, thankfully, habitable), but indeed, their whole existence.  Maria, a young bride of only twenty one years, gently cradled and rocked her sleeping baby girl (Alatea, three months old) as she anxiously looked out the front window for the return of her husband, Enrique, who had gone out (what seemed an eternity ago) into the unknown…to try and supply their needs.  Suddenly there was a special rapping on the back patio door!  It was Enrique!  A few moments later the two lovers embraced and then the provider brought in the rather large treasure he had retrieved…for his treasures.  Taking the child (who had awakened) from his wife’s arms, the man of the house looked on as Maria surveyed the hard fought haul.  After a half minute she turned and said, “You couldn’t get a fifty inch plasma?”  “Sorry, darling,” said the tired forager, “they were all gone.  But this thirty-two inch HD flat screen will do…for now.” “I suppose you're right,” agreed the mrs., taking the beginning to squirm child. “But I also have this,” he said with a mischievous smile as he quickly removed his red backpack and, placing it on the kitchen table, unzipped and then revealed a high-dollar, Dell laptop.  “Enrique!” squealed Maria.  “It’s just what I wanted!”

Sorry.  I don’t mean to diminish the trouble and tragedy in Chile.  But really, barely after the earth stops wobbling and the looters (certain unrestrained citizens) start going on a shopping spree?  Grocery store, I can see that.  But Plasma TV’s?  Now, granted, it hasn’t happened here (and I pray it never does), but I hope if we are visited by the unthinkable…that our first impulse is not to take…but to give.
